Hot, dry spell grips country as Sindh braces for heatwave

A spell of hot and dry weather persisted across most parts of Pakistan on Wednesday, with several areas of Sindh and Balochistan experiencing extreme temperatures.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, maximum temperatures in Turbat were expected to reach 45°C, while Mithi, Jacobabad and Nawabshah could record highs of up to 44°C.

Temperatures in Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana were likely to hover around 42°C.

In Karachi, temperatures showed a slight decline compared to the previous day, but weather conditions were expected to remain hot and dry, with the mercury forecast to reach 38°C.

The Met Office said another heatwave was likely to affect Sindh from May 7, while a fresh spell of intense heat in Karachi was expected to begin from May 13. It ruled out the possibility of rainfall in the city during May based on current weather projections.

Authorities advised citizens to take precautionary measures, including avoiding direct exposure to the sun during peak hours and ensuring adequate hydration.

Karachi experienced one of its hottest days of the season earlier this week, with temperatures exceeding 40°C due to the suspension of sea breeze and persistent hot, dry northwesterly winds, pushing the city into heatwave conditions.

The ongoing extreme heat has reportedly claimed 14 lives in the metropolis over the past two days, including eight deaths recorded on Monday.
