Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday promoted Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Aamer Raza to the rank of four-star general and appointed him as the Commander National Strategic Command.
The prime minister congratulated General Aamer Raza on his promotion and new assignment, expressing confidence in his leadership and wishing him success in carrying out the responsibilities of the post.
The office of Commander National Strategic Command was created under the Pakistan Army, Air Force and Navy (Amendment) Acts, 2025, which also introduced a new military command structure. Under the legislation, Field Marshal Asim Munir was designated as the Chief of Defence Forces.
The reforms abolished the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), with General Sahir Shamshad Mirza becoming the last officer to serve in the role before it was discontinued.
Under the amended law, the prime minister is empowered to appoint the Commander National Strategic Command from among serving Pakistan Army four-star generals on the recommendation of the Chief of Army Staff, who also serves as the Chief of Defence Forces. The appointment carries a three-year tenure.
Before his promotion, General Aamer Raza was serving as the Chief of the General Staff. He has previously commanded the Lahore Corps and also served as Chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila.
