Pakistan borrows Rs215bn in first month of fiscal year

The federal government borrowed Rs215 billion during July, the first month of the ongoing financial year, according to official documents.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs documents show that the government received Rs210 billion in loans and Rs5 billion in grants during the month.

Around Rs120 billion was secured through budgetary support and short-term financing, while approximately Rs95 billion was obtained for project funding.

Pakistan also secured $763 million in foreign loans during July, up $68.5 million compared with the same month last year.

However, receipts from bilateral and multilateral lenders declined during the month, while funds raised through Naya Pakistan Certificates increased significantly.

The government raised $343.99 million through Naya Pakistan Certificates in July, compared with $196.22 million during the corresponding month of the previous fiscal year, marking an increase of around $148 million.

Among bilateral partners, Germany provided $9.94 million, while Saudi Arabia contributed $7.4 million.

Pakistan received a combined $252.83 million from multilateral financial institutions during July.

The Asian Development Bank released $59.17 million, while the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank provided $6.57 million.

The World Bank and its affiliated institutions accounted for the largest share of multilateral financing at $130 million. Pakistan also received $29.22 million under the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The Islamic Development Bank provided $1.75 million, while an additional $22.71 million was received through short-term financing.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development contributed $2 million, while the OPEC Fund provided $0.76 million during the month.
