LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has paid tribute to teachers, learners and all those working to promote education and literacy on the occasion of World Literacy Day.
In her message, the chief minister extended her greetings and appreciation to teachers and paid tribute to young people pursuing knowledge, as well as everyone contributing to teaching and learning.
She said the pursuit of knowledge and learning was an integral part of the country’s values, stressing that every individual had the right to learn and acquire knowledge.
“Providing literacy opportunities for the development and prosperity of every citizen is the foremost responsibility of the government,” she said.
Maryam Nawaz said this year’s World Literacy Day, being observed under the theme “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity,” carried special significance.
She stressed that promoting literacy could not be achieved without making it an individual, national and global priority.
The chief minister said the Punjab government was paying particular attention to digital literacy among the younger generation to equip them with the skills needed to meet the demands of the modern era.
She said innovative initiatives such as the School Meal Programme were helping increase awareness about literacy in underdeveloped and disadvantaged areas of Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz said literacy was not limited to reading books, but also included acquiring skills and technical knowledge in line with the requirements of the modern age.
She called for collective efforts by all segments of society to achieve literacy targets and ensure greater access to learning opportunities across the province.
