Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stressed the need for continued consultations between Tehran and Islamabad to promote regional peace and security amid renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States.
According to Iranian state media, Araghchi made the remarks during a meeting with Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam, on Wednesday.
The ambassador briefed the foreign minister on the latest state of bilateral relations and the embassy’s plans to further strengthen ties between the neighbouring countries.
Araghchi also appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in facilitating diplomacy and said continued consultations between Tehran and Islamabad were essential for mutual interests as well as regional security and stability.
Pakistan has played a key mediating role in efforts to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the United States, alongside Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Türkiye. Diplomatic efforts previously led to an interim peace agreement in June, but the understanding later broke down and hostilities resumed.
The latest escalation has also affected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route. Iran has restricted traffic through the waterway, while the United States has imposed a counter-blockade on Iranian ports.
Iran said on Wednesday that it had attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz after the United States sank five Iranian oil tankers, marking a major escalation in attacks on shipping since the conflict began.
The renewed hostilities have pushed oil prices above $100 a barrel, while at least one seafarer has reportedly been killed and another remains missing.
The developments have raised concerns over the security of one of the world’s most important energy corridors and the broader impact of the US-Iran confrontation on regional stability.
