ISLAMABAD – Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, emphasizing the need for a more responsive and effective UN capable of addressing the priorities of developing countries, during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and United Nations Secretary-General candidate Michelle Bachelet Jeria. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, where the two sides exchanged views on the role of the United Nations in promoting international peace, sustainable development and the rules-based international order. Dar reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism and underscored the country’s continued support for the objectives and principles of the UN Charter, respect for international law and adherence to international treaties. Highlighting the central role of the United Nations in advancing the global development agenda, the deputy prime minister stressed that the world body must remain responsive to the aspirations and development priorities of the Global South and ensure that the concerns of developing nations receive greater attention within the multilateral system.
He also emphasized that sustainable international peace depends on the peaceful resolution of longstanding disputes through the faithful implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
In this context, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and the Palestine issue should be resolved in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the people concerned.
Michelle Bachelet commended Pakistan’s continued efforts to promote regional peace, stability and international cooperation, while appreciating the country’s longstanding contributions to the United Nations, including its role in UN peacekeeping operations and support for multilateral diplomacy.
The meeting comes as candidates seeking to become the next United Nations Secretary-General continue engaging with member states to present their vision for strengthening the organization and addressing evolving global challenges.
Pakistan has consistently advocated for a stronger multilateral system, greater representation of developing countries in global decision-making and enhanced international cooperation to tackle peace, security and sustainable development challenges.
